HP - Bill Hewlett and Dave Packard tossed a coin to decide whether thecompany they founded would be called Hewlett-Packard or Packard-Hewlett.

Mozilla Thunderbird More Secure Than Microsoft Outlook

The French military is now using the Thunderbird client on over 80,000 computers as it finds Mozilla's latest email client more secure than Microsoft Outlook. The department found Mozilla's open source design permitted France to build extensions for security, while Microsoft's proprietary software allowed no extensions to be made.
According to Reuters, "France's military chose open source software after an internal government debate that began in 2003 and culminated in a 6 November 2007, directive requiring state agencies Seek maximum technological and commercial independence."
The military has released some of its work to the public under the name 'TrustedBird' and co-branded it with Mozilla.
The French government is also shifting to other open source software such as Linux instead of Windows and OpenOffice instead of Microsoft Office.
Reuters quoted Lieutenant-Colonel Frederic Suel, ministry of defence as saying, "They may move beyond government, because TrustedBird's security extensions make it transposable to large international companies."

Google Experimenting With Browser Login For Chrome OS

Google has made a change to Chrome OS to move the user login from the machine to the browser. Our guess is Google is, or will eventually use, Google Friend Connect to facilitate login.

The feature was first mentioned on October 13: “Using Chrome as our login manager has a number of potential benefits.
Explore these tradeoffs and decide what to do about the login manager.” The code was checked in on December 14: “An early version of this change is finally in. It’s not ready for daily use yet, and we haven’t gotten the network picker on there or anything yet, but at least we’ve got a baseline in there. I’m filing issues for the follow-on work.”

There are lots of potential benefits to having users log into machines via the browser. In particular it makes syncing easier and furthers the notion that you can log into any Chrome OS machine and have exactly the same experience as you would on any other machine. The fact that users can’t download any software to Chrome OS computers furthers this experience.

But it’s also clearly interesting from an identity standpoint. Facebook and Twitter are both making strong plays as the defacto online identity for hundreds of millions of Internet users. Facebook Connect in particular is becoming a very popular way for third party sites to easily add identity and login features to apps.

But people using Chrome OS devices will be logging into the Internet first and foremost with a Google account, or via Friend Connect (which currently allows signin via Google, Twitter, Yahoo, AIM, Netlog, OpenID, etc.). By centralizing authentication once, Google can then use the same Friend Connect credentials to automatically login to sites that support it.

Websites Asks To Press F1 Key ? DON’T PRESS IT

Microsoft has been reported of a vulnerability discovered in Windows operating systems Windows XP, Windows 2000 and Windows Server 2003 which exploits the VB Script. Microsoft has recently released an Advisory named “Microsoft Security Advisory (981169)”

As per the advisory there is a vulnerability that if a user presses F1 Key on being asked by a Website or webpage, the website can run potentially malicious code or scrip on such computers. That computer can get hacked, information can be stolen or it may also lead to data theft.

It is an advice to all our readers and Windows XP, Windows 2002 and Windows 2003 Server users to beware of this vulnerability and do not press the F1 Key when asked by a website. This may leave your computer unsecured or infected with virus or trojans.

Even if you are a Windows Vista User or Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 user, its a safety tip to not click F1 Key when asked by a website.

Electronic firms to enlist official dumping centers

Bangalore: According to a national survey conducted by an international NGO, India generates a whopping four lakh tons of hazardous e-waste from electronic products every year. At this point, the Ministry of Environment and Forests (MoEF) has proposed a new policy on the disposal of E-waste.

E-waste (Management and Handling) Rules 2010, make it mandatory for all manufacturers and dealers of E-products to mention the addresses of places where the consumers can discard the electronic gadgets, once they become obsolete or are ready to be recycled, reports Renuka Phadnis of Bangalore Mirror. After Europe and the U.S., India is the first
nation among developing countries to draft such a proposal.


The proposed law will make it mandatory for the all manufacturers to come up with a unique identification code for each of their products.

Manufacturers will be responsible for setting up collection centers to keep an eye on the process and ensure that the hazardous products are handled by registered dismantlers or recyclers in order to control the possible damage to the environment and human health.

The fact that almost all obsolete electronic items have components believed to be carcinogenic is something that cannot be ignored, said an MoEF official. While the draft policy does not deal with individual consumers, bulk clients like banks, MNCs and other big companies will now have to deposit their e-waste at authorized collection centres instead of selling them to local wholesale scrap shops.

"Bulk consumer will also have to file annual returns on the quantity of the e-waste disposed. After Europe and the US, India is the first nation among developing countries to draft such a proposal," the MoEF official said.

The draft rules, in the public domain (http://moef.nic.in/index.php) for two months, have been received positively by many.

"Bigger companies recognise the value of safe disposal but hundreds of other companies don't care a damn. This notification will force people who did not dispose of e-waste correctly," said Electronics City Industries Association (ELCIA) CEO Prakash Rao.

Once the rules are in force, companies can't sell e-waste to any scrap dealer. Rao said only 10-15 percent of companies in Bangalore dispose of e-waste correctly. The rest sell to scrap dealers as a cost is involved in following responsible disposal. Besides, selling to scrap dealers is a source of income for some companies. Scrap dealers take whatever can be reused and throw away the rest in ways considered dangerous.

Wilma Rodrigues, founder member of Saahas, an NGO that deals with solutions for solid waste management in Bangalore, said authorised e-waste re-cyclers in Bangalore are running below capacity because they don't get enough material to recycle.
